The Bangladeshi High Court has ordered authorities to disclose within the next seven days what actions have been taken against those involved in the scandal concerning the sending of workers to Malaysia.

Shafiqur Rahman assured that those responsible will face proper action based on the findings of the probe committee.
This directive came following a preliminary hearing of a writ petition on Sunday afternoon at a division bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan.
On June 24, the probe committee, led by Additional Secretary Noor Mohammad Mahbubul Haque, submitted a report detailing the plight of 17,000 workers who were unable to travel to Malaysia despite having paid an average of Tk 500,000 each.
The report was handed over to State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, and is currently under final review before being forwarded to the Prime Minister’s office.
In light of the report, the current and former leaders of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) engaged in lengthy discussions with the state minister, but no specific agencies were identified in the report.
State Minister Shafiqur Rahman assured that those responsible will face proper action based on the findings of the probe committee.
Under the agreement with the Malaysian government, Bangladesh was permitted to send 526,676 workers to Malaysia by May 31.
However, the Bangladesh Manpower Employment and Training Bureau (BMET) cleared only 494,642 individuals, leaving 32,000 workers unable to proceed for unspecified reasons.
The workers were required to pay 78,990 taka each, covering costs such as passports, health examinations, registration fees, welfare fees, insurance, smart card fees, and the recruiting agency’s service charge.
Besides, the hiring companies were supposed to cover costs related to air travel and other expenses.
In a troubling turn of events, it was revealed that Malaysia’s Amin Noor and the associated recruiting agencies collected an average of Tk 500,000 from 476,642 workers, amassing a staggering sum of approximately Tk 225,000 crore.
As the Bangladesgi High Court’s deadline approaches, the public awaits the outcome of this significant investigation and the steps that will be taken to ensure justice for the affected workers

The Bangladeshi High Court today (30 June) sought information from authorities concerned on actions taken against those involved in the alleged embezzlement of at least Tk20,000 crore from aspiring expatriate workers promising to send them to Malaysia.
Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy has been asked to inform the court in this regard within the next seven working days after talking to the relevant people including the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
The Bangladeshi High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed over the matter in the public interest.
Advocate Tanveer Ahmed stood on behalf of the writ in the court. He had filed the writ petition with the court previously following the publication of a media report by a national daily newspaper on 2 June that claimed Tk20,000 crore had been embezzled from 30,000 Malaysia-bound workers.
According to expatriate ministry data, a total of 16,970 aspiring expatriates failed to go to Malaysia within the 31 May deadline set by the Malaysian government, despite obtaining permission from the Bangladesh Manpower Employment and Training Bureau (BMET).
Many were unable to secure tickets due to delays caused by recruiting agencies.
